Readible References on Slides

A reoccurring pattern is that students use numbers for references on slides, which is not helpful, as I cannot lookup the meaning of these numbers during the presentation. Hence, I would argue this is an anti-pattern.

We could add a slide in the demo slides to show how to add proper references. Ideally these show the full last name of this first author and the year - venue would also be helpful but is probably rather hard to achieve technically.

What are your opinions on this matter?

If we are planning to do this, we need to decide on the packages to use and include for that.

i have some ideas :
1- Replace [2] with an author–year citation, e.g., [Thüm, 2002].
2-Use a small superscript author–year citation instead of a numeric superscript to save space. like power in numbers (2^3) instade of 3 we put author–year
3- Keep [2], but show Thüm, 2002 (or the full reference) as a tooltip when hovering over the citation .

I would propose a solution where we generalize a solution that @EagleoutIce has shown me for this situation. We keep the numbered references (so that they do not take too much space) and add additional "footnotes" (not really, would build something custom) on the bottom of the slide (see example). I should be able to build something that only takes one command to create both, so that it is also usable by students.

Given that you pinged me with an Image :D (is the double emdash in the footer without a intermediary section intentional?)
So there are two main ways to to this:

1. collect the cites:

   1. have a global register (otherwise this breaks animations so you have to use \global or \gdef etc.) which is cleared at the begin of every frame (you can also reset per slide, a frame can hold multiple slides as animations with \onslide etc. if you append every time in step 2) or, slightly more wasteful but easier as you do not need a onframe hook you construct the register name uniquely based on the current frame (\csname framecitereg@\insertframenumber\endcsname, likiwise you can make this per overlay \insertoverlaynumber if you e.g., want to have an easier way to hide singular bib entries on the same sldie)
   2. you hook into \cite to also append the used keys to the register (e.g., \gappto\framecitereg{...}) but make sure to respect the slide/overlay number! Otherwise a \onslide<...> will appear always as onslide still execute the contents of its box to measure the size to block. You can do this with 1) \insertoverlaynumber, 2) \beamer@doifinframe or) by copying the used overlay, onslide etc. command into the register (e.g,. so that the register isn't just the citekeys citeA,citeB... but already contains the formatting \BottomCite<2->{citeA},\BottomCite<3->{citeB},...
   3. You proivde another macro \PrintCiteRegBottom or something which iterates over all entries of the cite register and formats them at a given location. This should hook at the end of each frame (but before the footer, just to be sure so AtEnd... hooks work :)) and if you want to be more customizable yo can have a flag which checks whether the user already requested a manual print of the register - this would allow you to have an automated positioning but also to let the user overwrite this with a custom position if he/she likes

2. print on sight

   1. you need a counter which resets every slide

   and hook into \cite so that every cite call increments this counter (\stepcounter, is global by default ✨)

   2. every cite uses the counter to compute the location of the new bottom cite based on a fixed but user configurable anchor (e.g. 1cm right and up of the south west page anchor)
      this way you can use \tikz[remember picture,overlay] { \node at([xshift=<counter>*<assumed/measured height>]current page.south west) {...};} you can of course also use \ht<printbox> with saveboxes to measure and compute the real height! - all of this has the advantage that you do not have to delay the printing and hence do not have to care for onslide etc.

Could be a bit more fancy (😉), but having a special command that show the number on the slide and the full or abbreviated reference at the bottom sounds good.

This is basically also what we enforce/recommend to students (numbers + footlines) even though i never came around to automate this :D
