Message "TBS Sensor Unit not found"

Hello,

I am very interessted in your TBS-Project. Great for DIY on bike :-)
It tried to connect the Windows software with the Arduino-board. I compiled "Tbs4RpmWin-master.zip" with Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Community Edition, startet the software and got the following message:
"Make sure the TBS unit is plugged in before starting this application.", "TBS Sensor Unit not found"
The Arduino with "TbsShieldRpm-master.zip" and "Tbs4Rpm-master.zip" is connected via COM11, both softwares (Windows-GUI and Arduino-Sketch) were compiled with no errors. The COM-port was not in use by another application. At the moment I have not installed the sensor-shield on the Arduino-board because I wanted to test the software standalone.

If I connect via Arduino serial monitor to the Arduino board there are the messages "idle0" and "idle1" every 10 seconds.

What can I do the the Windows-GUI will connect to the Arduino-board or is the sensor shield required essentially?

The issue is the very simple serial port find method used. It is not finding the serial port the Arduino is on. This is left to you to improve or hard code.

Hi!
Perhaps a little late, but I had the same issue as @schnorpser, so I digged into it.

It is in deed mandatory to have the sensors attached to the Arduino.
If not, I get aborts after a few seconds, stating a buffer overflow.
I didn't go into it deeper, but I assume, the values from the sensors are interpreted and if not within specific limits, the Windows code goes havoc. The sensors emit values in the range 0.2 .. 4.7 V. If the Arduino reads 0 V (as is with no sensors attached), the mathematics seem to tilt.

Additionally, as my COM ports go from 4 up when using USB for the Arduino, I had to remove the part, where COM ports with single digits are skipped.

Even then I sometimes get the message, that I have to connect the sensor board in advance, before starting the application.
Just starting again resolves this.

And lastly, I removed two of the four displays in the Win App, since my BMW is a Boxer R1100 RS.

All in all a very fine implementation, thanks @Makuna!

Please feel free to create a pull request for issues you fix. Of course, the two cylinders versus four cylinders is more of a modification. But if you added an easy way to switch include that also.

The com ports shenanigans were an old issue with Arduino I was working around dealing with Leonardo boards (the board I used).

Hi Michael!
My mod is only sort of a quick and dirty hack :(
To make it worth for getting presented to an audience, I would propose to add an additional parameter in the data stream from Arduino to the Windows part.
This parameter should carry the information how many cylinders are used in the Arduino code.
With this information the Windows part can adapt the visualization accordingly.
That said, I have to confess, I'm not that skilled to implement that.

The COM port change, on th other side, is easy, I can present that part.
I will have a look into it and place a pull request (if I decipher, how to do that ;)

Hi Michael, I have fiddled together something that could make the number of cylinders parameterizable. C# is not my language, you would have to implement the suggested changes yourself. Changes would have to be made both in the Arduino app and in the Windows part. I raised a pull request: #3 Gruß Harald
