Filippo Ugolini

Doctoral candidate at Princeton, working on the literature of the ninth century, and a programmer who builds tools to read it at scale. Digital Humanities Fellow at Princeton's Center for Digital Humanities.

Currently

  • Fengliu and the ninth century — a corpus spanning the Han through the early Tang, built and trained to trace the semantic drift of one tremendously elusive compound. Code to follow once it has been tidied.
  • The material signature of woodblock prints — with Princeton's Department of East Asian Studies: training models to detect the cracks and cuts left by the block itself.

Things I build for myself

  • Evim — a PDF reader with an annotation layer, written from scratch in Python and PyQt. A separate render process to get around the GIL, shared memory across the boundary, tiling at extreme zoom.
  • Vocabolario — a fast desktop dictionary in Python over SQLite, with a GTK 3 interface. Built because I needed one to write my dissertation.
  • NewsScraper — a pipeline that fetches the Italian dailies as PDF, compresses them, and mails them out. Runs on a Raspberry Pi. Saves me twenty minutes every morning.

Not all of these are public yet. They will be.
