Bounding the blast radius of an AI agent: it cannot exceed its grant, even when the data it reads tells it to.
A personal learning project. An agent reads customer records, sends messages, writes notes, and issues refunds. One of the records has an instruction planted in it telling the agent to forward a card number to an outside address. The agent has no credentials, cannot choose its own purpose, and cannot reach a destination nobody approved. Every decision is recorded in a hash-chained log.
It runs fully offline on a deterministic mock and switches to a real model
(Anthropic or OpenAI) with two environment variables. SAMPLE_RUN.md has
verbatim captures of all three.
The rule this repo follows: no claim without a test.

Boundary A cannot be made airtight. No classifier reliably separates instruction from data inside natural language. Anything that claims otherwise is selling something.
Boundary B can be, because it is code checking a written policy rather than a model exercising judgment. So the design assumes the injection lands and makes that survivable: the model proposes, the broker decides.

tests/test_defense_in_depth.py disables these in combination and measures
what escapes, which gives an unusually precise answer:
- Egress alone contains the whole corpus. Handle releasability alone contains the whole corpus.
- Provenance alone contains every indirect attack but not a direct one. When the payload arrives in the operator's own turn, attributing it to the user is the correct answer, so provenance has nothing to object to. The egress allowlist is what refuses those.
- With all three disabled, 21 of 31 attacks get through. That number is what makes the others mean anything: the corpus really does provoke effects.

31 payloads across seven categories, planted in the operator's turn, in a
record's notes, or in a record field. attacks/corpus.yaml documents each one's
category and technique.
The gate enforces four metrics and only one is allowed to be non-zero:

The second one is the one most gates lack. An attack the agent never acted on
is not contained, it is untested, and without measuring it a corpus can quietly
stop provoking anything while reporting a perfect score. That happened during
development and is written up in SAMPLE_RUN.md.

Selection requires both the provider name and its key; anything else falls back to the mock, so tests and CI never touch the network. Both SDKs are imported lazily.
In the captured runs neither model took the bait: Claude Opus 5 flagged the planted instruction as an injection attempt, and GPT-4o simply answered and stopped. That is a good result and it is not the claim here. Model judgment is a fourth layer, and it is the one that cannot be tested into existence or relied on next release.
- Provenance is a heuristic at Boundary A. It tracks where consequential arguments came from, not whether text contains an instruction. It fails closed, and it is the first of four gates rather than the gate.
- This is not a formal guarantee. Enforcement here means code, a written policy, a mutation-checked test, and a tamper-evident log. It is not differential privacy and not a proof of non-interference.
- Policy quality is the ceiling. A grant that is too broad authorizes the attack legitimately. Nothing here discovers what should be sensitive.
- Aggregation is only partly addressed. Per-call decisions plus a session spend ceiling; no cross-session pattern detection.
- A handle is still a correlation identifier. Per-session scope by default for that reason; global scope is available and documented as a tradeoff.
- Everything assumes the broker is the only path out. An agent with a raw shell or an unmediated MCP server voids the model.
Deliberately small: no HTTP API, no auth, no persistence beyond the log files, one worked toolset, synthetic records. Those are seams, not oversights. prompt-injection-benchmark measures the control this repo builds: it runs a synthetic attack corpus against defenses including this one, and reports what each still lets through.
hardened-mcp-server is the layer underneath: it asks whether the tool definition an agent was granted access to is still the one that was approved, and deliberately ships no authorization and no capability broker because this repo already measures both.
