Decision: Qdrant provides built-in hybrid search (dense + BM25 + RRF) in a single API call, eliminating ~130 lines of manual BM25/RRF code, while remaining self-hostable and free.
Why Groq instead of OpenAI or Anthropic?
Groq runs LLMs on custom LPU (Language Processing Unit) hardware that delivers ~500 tokens/second — roughly 10x faster than OpenAI's API for equivalent models. This makes streaming feel genuinely real-time. Groq also offers llama-3.3-70b-versatile for free during development. For production, the same code works with any LangChain-compatible LLM by changing two lines.
Why async ingestion (202 Accepted) instead of synchronous upload?
Indexing a 20-page PDF involves:
- PyPDF parsing (~1s)
- Chunking into 50-200 pieces
- Embedding each chunk through a neural model (~5-20s)
- Writing to Qdrant
Total: 15-45 seconds. HTTP requests time out at ~30s in most browsers and proxies. Returning 202 immediately and letting the client poll every 1.5s gives the user a responsive experience while processing happens in the background.
Why two-stage retrieval (hybrid → rerank) instead of just returning top-5 directly?
Problem: Embedding similarity is good but imprecise. A chunk about "EC2 pricing documentation" might score lower than a chunk just mentioning "pricing" many times.
Solution:
- Stage 1 (Hybrid, top-20): Cast a wide net — fast, catches semantically related AND keyword-matching chunks
- Stage 2 (Rerank, top-5): Cross-encoder reads the question AND each chunk together — much more accurate at "does this chunk actually answer the question?"
Result: +1.5% correctness, +1.5% relevance vs hybrid-only (per ablation study).
Why JWT instead of session-based auth?
JWT tokens are stateless — the server can verify them by checking the cryptographic signature without any database lookup. This means:
- Zero DB cost per authenticated request
- Any backend replica can verify any token (horizontal scaling)
- Tokens can embed tenant_id, user_id, and role — no extra DB query needed
The downside is you can't revoke a JWT until it expires (24h). For enterprise use, you'd add a token blacklist in Redis.
Why multi-tenancy? I'm the only user.
Multi-tenancy is built into the data model from day one because:
- Data isolation is much harder to add later than to include from the start
- Every
Documentand Qdrant chunk is tagged withtenant_id, so queries are always filtered - If you add a second user or share this with a team, their documents never mix with yours
- This is a portfolio project — showing proper SaaS isolation is a strong architectural signal
Why SSE (Server-Sent Events) instead of WebSockets for streaming?
WebSockets are bidirectional — good for chat UIs where the client sends messages back. SSE is unidirectional (server → client) but much simpler:
- No connection upgrade handshake
- Works through HTTP/2 multiplexing
- Automatic reconnection in browsers
- Standard
fetch()API — works with JWT Bearer headers (which nativeEventSourcedoesn't support)
For a Q&A interface where the client asks once and the server streams the answer, SSE is the correct tool.
Why Azure Container Apps instead of a VM?
Container Apps is serverless — it scales to zero when nobody is using DoCopilot. Since this is a dev/portfolio project with intermittent usage, paying for a running VM 24/7 would be wasteful. Container Apps charges only for actual request processing time.

- Always run backend from the project root (
